September 29–October 1 Lauren On Thursday, Lauren hauled in on her horse Irish Midnight and showed in the 0.95 Meter and 1.0 Meter Training Jumper classes. Going straight from the trailer to the show ring had Mickey a little frazzled, but on Friday, he settled in beautifully and put in smooth rounds in the 0.75 Meter, 0.95 Meter and 1.0 Meter Training Jumper classes.

On Saturday, Lauren finished her show strongly with solid rounds in the 0.75 Meter Training Jumper and two Low Children’s Jumper classes at 1.0 Meter. Good work Lauren!

Keep up with our 2011 GHHJA points and track how we’re doing at pursuing year-end ribbons. Points are listed online at GHHJA.org

September 10 Marin Marin Anderson advanced this weekend from the Beginner division and showed for the first time in Novice. Congratulations Marin! Novice was very competitive at this show, but Marin handled the pressure like a veteran. She showed Carousel Lady in Red — “Lady” — placing 8TH in all Novice Equitation Over Fences and 7TH in the Novice Equitation on the Flat. Way to go Marin!

September 10 Lauren Lauren Davis brought two horses with her to this show. Her baby in training — Leo’s Blue Moon — she showed in the Itty Bitty Jumpers. Leo did fantastic, placing 3RD, 2ND and 6TH. Great work Lauren on bringing Leo along!

On Irish Midnight, Lauren showed in the combined Junior Adult and Open Jumper division, placing 4TH, 2ND and 1ST. Yeah, they kicked butt, as usual. These placings put Lauren up enough points to win RESERVE CHAMPION. Congratulations Lauren!

September 10–11 Emily Emily Albitz and her horse Celestial Spree made a strong showing in the Schooling Jumpers the entire weekend. Spree and Emily jumped to a well deserved GRAND CHAMPION on Saturday, WINNING the Timed First Jump Off class and Power and Speed class. They placed 2ND in the Timed First Round class, only a hair’s breadth out of 1st.

On Sunday, Emily worked hard to try and put in a couple more winning rounds. Unfortunately, a jump caught her and Spree by surprise, resulting in a “refusal”. However, the pair road well enough to finish 4TH in that first Timed First Jump Off class. The following Timed First Round class, they WON. In the final Power and Speed class, Emily really turned it on, but perhaps a hair too much. She tried a handy turn over an oxar, but she turned so tight, her stirrup just caught the standard, bringing down the jump and resulting in 4 faults. She placed 4TH in that class, but over all, it was a good weekend for Emily and Spree.

September 10–11 Coco Coco Bean and her mount Storm Chaser — “Sollie” — were by far the most consistent competitors from Devereaux Sporthorses at this horse show. With poise, Coco won GRAND CHAMPION Saturday. Her and Sollie placed 1ST, 4TH and 2ND in the Novice Equitation Over Fences classes respectively. As a perk, they also placed 2ND in the Warm-up. In the Novice Equitation on the Flat, Coco blew the competition away, and easily placed 1ST in that class.

On Sunday, Coco’s and Sollie’s performance was much the same. They WON two Novice Equitation Over Fences classes. A social event back home prevented Coco from staying long enough to compete on the flat, but the two 1st places were all Coco needed to secure RESERVE CHAMPION. As a perk, Coco and Sollie placed 5TH in the Warm-up. Congratulations Coco!

September 10–11 Amy Sparky rocks Amy’s world. Sparky did fantastic in the Schooling Jumpers. On Saturday, Tall Dun and Handsome and Amy didn’t ribbon in every class, due to a communication break down on what fence to jump that resulted in the pair going off course in the Timed First Round, but in the Timed First Jump Off, Amy and Sparky placed 3RD and in the Power and Speed, they placed 2ND.

On Sunday, Sparky came out guns-a-blazin’. He wasn’t quite fast enough to catch the horse that won Grand Champion, but with two 3RDs and a 1ST he came pretty dang close, winning RESERVE CHAMPION. Way to go Sparky!

September 10–11 Lisa Lisa Roemer and her mare Gotta Have Faith — “Faith” — did great this weekend in the Schooling Jumpers. On Saturday, a couple cheap rails kept Lisa out of the top most placings. The pair did fantastic, though, and finished with two 4THs and a strong 3RD. On Sunday, they did even better, placing 2ND, in the Timed First Jump Off class, only one-tenth of a second out of 1st. They placed 4TH in the Timed First Round, and in the Power and Speed had an unfortunate rail in the power phase, but over all the pair did amazing. Congratulations Lisa!

September 11 Isabel Isabel Johnson showed Carousel Lady in Red — “Lady” — on Sunday in the highly competitive Pre-beginner division. Together Isabel and Lady put in consistent rounds that won them a 1ST, a 3RD and a 7TH in the Pre-beginner Over Fences. In the Walk, Trot, Canter class, Isabel placed 3RD. These placings gave Isabel just the edge she needed to tie for RESERVE CHAMPION. Well done Isabel. Congratulations!

August 20–21 Emily Emily and her horse Celestial Spree performed well on the first day of competition at this show. They WON the Timed First Jump Off class, placed 2ND in the Timed First Round class, and placed 4TH in the Power and Speed. These placings put Emily and Spree up enough points to be declared GRAND CHAMPION.

The second day of competition was cut short, when it felt like in the oppresive heat, Spree wasn’t breathing well enough to continue showing. Spree did manage to win a 2ND, though, in the Timed First Jump Off class. Congratulations Emily!

August 20–21 Marin Together, Marin and Carousel Lady in Red took on the highly competitive Beginner division. On Saturday, they did well and placed 3RD, 5TH and 7TH in the Beginner Equitation Over Fences. They placed 6TH in the Beginner Equitation on the Flat. In addition, they placed 2ND in the Warm-up.

On Sunday, Marin and Lady did even better. They placed 2ND, 3RD, and 5TH in the Beginner Equitation Over Fences. In the Beginner Equitation on the Flat, they won 2ND and in the Warm-up, they placed 5TH. Congratulations Marin!

August 21 Dev On Sunday Dev schooled Christine Rayne’s horse Shake N Bake in the Schooling Hunter division.

American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show, Youth Championship
August 5–13
AQHA, AQHYA
Oklahoma City Fairgrounds, Oklahoma City, OK

August 8–9 Annie Annie Bean and her horses Mail Me the Details — Mickey — qualified for the 2nd year in a row to show at the AQHYA World Championship in the Working Hunter and Equitation over fences. Annie also qualified for the AQHYA World Championship Show in the Hunter Hack, Working Hunter, and Equitation over fences on Sollie. Annie showed brilliantly on both mounts, putting in technically correct rounds. Unfortunately, Mickey was just tense enough to not make the cut for the finals, and Sollie just missed getting into the finals by a missed lead change in one round and a chipped distance to one fence in another round.

The competition was unbelievably stiff. Only the most perfect of perfect rounds made the cut. The pressure was also quite high, and the schooling situation was crazy, as usual. All things considered, Annie and her horses performed great. They will be back next year!

August 8–10 Libby This was Libby Poulin and her horse Leo’s Jazzy Gold’s — Cody — second trip to the AQHYA World Championship for jumping. The Prelims were tense. Libby had 4 faults in the first round. The 4 faults were very disappointing, especially coming off of the World Show win the year prior. For a moment, it was unclear as to if she would make it into the finals, but by the skin of her teeth, she made the cut.

Libby and Cody made up for their Prelim round by putting in a double-clear round in the finals, and qualifying for the jump off. In the jump off, Libby turned the heat up, and set the time to beat. She missed a turn that might have shaved off several fractions of a second, but still, she was fast, and ended her round in the lead. Her missed turn, though, came back to bite her. The next horse in the ring beat her time by less than half a second. Libby missed winning the World Championship for a second year in a row by less than half a second. What a competition! It was a fun view, and Libby came home with a well deserved AQHYA RESERVE WORLD CHAMPION title in Jumping. Libby and Cody are quite the team and will always be a staple in Devereaux Sporthorses history.

April 2011

Big Country QHA Spring Show

April 19–24
AQHA
unrated
Extraco Events Center, Waco, TX

April 21–23 Annie Annie did well with her boys — Sollie and Mickey. She felt the pressure at this show to qualify for AQHYA World, and get a spot on the Texas A&M Equestrian Team. No worries, she got the job done.

April 21–23 Amy So, Amy won’t be qualifying for the AQHA World Show, but in her own words, she will tell you that she “doesn’t give a ‘explicatory comment.’ Sparky was AWESOME!” This die-hard duo changed a lot in the three days leading up to Waco. After a bit change, three rides in draw-reins, a new attitude, and a lot of prayer, Sparky and Amy came out ready to play, especially on the second day of competition. They WON the Amateur Hunter Over Fences under one judge on the first day of competition, and on the second day, Sparky was nearly perfect, minus his silly ending courtesy circles. However, with the second day being triple judged, competition was stiffer, and the pressure was on.

Amy made a few mistakes in the Amateur Equitation Over Fences, and Sparky changed his lead in the middle of one line in the Amateur Hunter Over Fences. This put them out of the top most placings in the Amateur classes. Sparky was still fantastic. Amy and Dev have decided that Sparky’s style may not be conducive to top placings in the hunter ring. They are now considering a career change for Sparky to jumpers.

Morgan Ranch/Stockmans Spring Show

April 14–17
AQHA
unrated
Hardy Murphy Coliseum, Ardmore, OK

There was a fair amount of crazy going on at this show. The second DSH had everything unloaded from the trailer, including horses, the area was pounded by a HEAVY hail storm. The first thing that went through Amy’s mind was “uh oh, in Oklahoma, hail this bad can be a sure sign of a tornado. Are those sirens I’m hearing in the distance?” It was hard to hear anything over the thundering hail, and not too much later, after Amy’s “tornado thinking,” a fellow trainer ran through the aisle, alerting fellow horse people that a tornado had touched down and was heading in the direction of the fair grounds. Those on the grounds were alerted to take cover in the coliseum.

Thankfully, of the two tornadoes that touched down near Ardmore, one lifted back into the clouds, dissipating before it arrived at the fairgrounds, and the other passed just a couple miles east of the fairgrounds. DSH was safe.

April 15–16 Annie Mickey and Sollie went brilliantly for Annie in the Youth classes.

April 15–16 Amy This show was cursed from the start. Sparky was scared to death and too tense to even canter right. Sparky and Amy will have to do some reanalysis and regrouping before Waco, which is on schedule for next week.

Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, Week II

March 29–April 3
USEF, USHJA, THJA
“AA” rated
Great Southwest Equestrian Center, Katy, TX

March 30–31 Dev Dev got the horses into the ring for their first rounds at the show, to get them accustomed to their settings and more supple for their owners, who would be showing them in the following days.

He started early Wednesday in the 2'6" Low Hunter Warm-up with Tall Dun and Handsome. Sparky has a tendency to be spooky and jump hard, so getting him in the ring early on in the week has proven in times past to be just the remedy. Sparky was a little quick, but otherwise quite good.

On Thursday, Dev competed in the jumpers with Idol Weiss, Leo’s Jazzy Gold, and Serendipity. Serendipity and Leo’s Jazzy Gold he showed in the 0.90 Meter Training Jumper class, and 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class. He showed Idol Weiss in the 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class as well, WINNING the class on him, and placing 2ND on Serendipity. Dev also showed Idol Weiss in the 1.05 Meter Training Jumper class.

March 31–April 1 Amy Amy and Tall Dun and Handsome did quite a bit of showing on Thursday. Together, they took on two Hopeful Hunter Over Fences classes, two Modified Adult Amateur Hunter Over Fences, the Modified Adult Amateur Equitation Over Fences class, and the Modified Adult Amateur Equitation on the Flat. The pair had some minor mistakes in every class, but Sparky did quite well, and Amy placed 8TH in the Equitation on the Flat.

On Sunday, Amy showed in two Hopeful Hunter Over Fences classes and the two remaining Modified Adult Amateur Hunter Over Fences classes. Good work Amy.

March 31–April 3 Lauren Irish Midnight, Lauren’s jumper machine, took on the Low Children’s Jumpers at Pin Oak. They showed alongside Dev in the 0.90 Meter Training Jumper class and 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class on Thursday.

On Friday, they took on the 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class and 1.0 Meter Low Children’s Jumper class. On Saturday, they showed in the 1.0 Meter Low Children’s Jumper class, and on Sunday, they finished up the show in the $1000 1.05 Meter Children’s Jumper Stake class.

April 1–3 Whitney Whitney and Serendipity put in stellar performances over the weekend and rocked the Low Adult Amateur Jumpers. On Friday, Whitney warmed Serendipity up in the 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class. She then showed in the 1.0 Meter Low Adult Amateur Jumper class, placing 2ND. On Saturday, Whitney and Serendipity WON the 1.0 Meter Low Adult Amateur Jumper class.

On Sunday, the stakes were raised, and Whitney rode Serendipity over the big fences in the $1000 1.05 Meter Adult Amateur Jumper Stake, placing 6TH. These results not only qualified her and Serendipity for the $10,000 1.05 Meter Child/Adult Jumper Classic, it also won Whitney a well deserved GRAND CHAMPION. Congratulations Whitney!

Serendipity had a rail in the Classic.

April 1–3 Libby Libby arrived Friday to tackle the Low Children’s Jumpers. She started on Friday, showing the bucking Leo’s Jazzy Gold in the 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class and 1.0 Meter Low Children’s Jumper class. On Saturday, the pair took on the 1.0 Meter Low Children’s Jumper class, and on Sunday, they shined in the $1000 1.05 Meter Low Children’s Jumper Stake class, placing 2ND. This result qualified them for the $10,000 1.05 Meter Low Child/Adult Jumper Classic. Unfortunately they suffered a cheap rail in the first round.

April 1–3 Hennah Hennah Saber and her horse Idol Weiss took on the High Children’s Jumpers over the weekend. This horse and rider team warmed up in the 1.0 Meter Training Jumper class on Friday, placing 3RD. On Friday, they also showed in the 1.10 Meter High Children’s Jumper class, and on Saturday, they showed in the 1.10 Meter High Children’s Jumper class. On Sunday, Hennah finished the show in the $1000 1.15 Meter High Children’s Jumper Stake class.

March 20 Amy Sparky and Amy showed at this show to prep for Pin Oak. Sparky had a little bit of attitude, but the team was judged separately, so they WON every class. Yay!

March 20 Jennifer Jennifer took Churchill and showed him in the Green Hunter under saddle, Novice 17 and Under equitation on the flat, and Novice 17 and Under under saddle. She placed 3RD with Churchill in the Novice 17 and Under under saddle.

February 26 Annie Annie and her horses — Sollie and Mickey — showed up the competition at this Quarter Horse Show. Annie claimed division CHAMPION on her horse Mickey in the Youth Hunter Over Fences and Youth Equitation Over Fences. Congratulations Annie!

February 26 Amy This was Amy and Sparky’s first attempt at Quarter Horse competition. They came out “gus ablazin’ ” in their first attempt at an Amateur class, placing 2ND under both judges in the Amateur Equitation Over Fences. However, the show format caught up to this pair, and the long wait between classes throughout the rest of the day was enough to stiffen Sparky. He struggled to make the distances throughout the rest of his classes, but otherwise, the team did fantastic.

February 11 Dev Dev got Leo’s Jazzy Gold and Idol Weiss ready for the weekend on Friday by putting in some schooling rounds in the show ring. He showed Leo’s Jazzy Gold in a 0.95 Meter Jumper class and a 1.0 Meter Jumper class. Idol Weiss, he showed in a 1.10 Meter Jumper class.

February 11–13 Lauren Lauren did quite a bit of showing on her jumper Irish Midnight. On Friday, she showed Micky up through the levels, participating in a class from the 0.85 Meter Jumpers, 0.95 Meter Jumpers, and 1.0 Meter Jumpers. On Saturday, Lauren showed her gelding in a class from the 1.0 Meter Jumpers to get in the ring and familiarize herself with the course set for the day, then she moved on to show in the first two classes of the Low Children’s Jumpers, placing 4TH in the first of those two classes. This team finished up Sunday by finishing out the last class of the Low Children’s Jumper division.

February 12 Libby Unfortunately, Libby’s show was cut short. Her horse Leo’s Jazzy Gold got sick and could not compete beyond two classes on Saturday. They showed in a class from the 1.0 Meter Jumpers and one class from the Low Children’s Jumpers. Libby and Cody placed 2ND in the one Low Children’s Jumper class. Cody has since recovered and is doing well.

February 12–13 Hennah Hennah showed her horse Idol Weiss in the High Children’s Jumpers over the weekend. On Saturday she let Ash see the fences in a 1.10 Meter Jumper class and then proceeded to the High Children’s division. In her first High Children’s round, she placed 2ND. On Sunday, Hennah finished up the High Children’s Jumper division, placing 7TH in the one class that day. Then she competed in the $5000 Children/Adult Amateur Classic, placing 8TH. October 30–31 Bigger Than Texas This was Tex’s very first trip to a horse show. He was a little scared at first, but settled in quite nicely and flatted beautifully for Dev on Sunday. A situation unfolded in the very ring Tex was being ridden in. It involved a kicking horse and a potential broken arm, and Tex didn’t even bat an eye.

October 30–31 Great Big Bag Bag acted like he’s been showing for years. Dev jumped in a little bit on Sunday. Bag was a superstar.

October 30–31 Tall Dun and Handsome Okay, so Sparky isn’t a baby, and we took him to the show with the hope that we could show him by Sunday. Prior to this outing, he was lame and very sore on his front heels. Sparky doesn’t have very good feet. He jumped on Saturday brave and well, but by Sunday his lack of fitness, and his sore heels caught up to him. He wasn’t jumping well at all, so we scratched at this show and just schooled. We’re confident we’ll get him back on track. He just has to heal, so we can get him back in shape. Get well soon Sparky.

She skipped showing Friday, shooting straight into the 1.10 Meter High Children’s Jumpers on Saturday, placing 5TH. Then after a course change that lasted more than 1 hour and 30 min, Hennah competed in the Children/Adult Jumper Classic at the height of 1.15 Meters. After a thorough vet check, it was deciphered that he was able to continue competing, just in not as many classes on Saturday. As a result, Libby only showed her boy in one class of the 1.0 Meter Low Children’s Jumpers, placing 4TH.

On Sunday, Libby came out strong, WINNING the 1.05 Meter Low Children’s Jumper. She also showed in classes from the 1.0 Meter Jumpers and 1.05 Meter Jumpers, placing 4TH in the 1.0 Meter and 3RD in the 1.05 Meter Jumper.

July 14–16 Dev Dev helped all the girls out alot at this show. He took all the boys (horses) into the show ring for their first rounds, so that if they decided to be silly, they were silly to Dev and not the girls. Thanks Dev!

On Wednesday, Dev showed Libby’s horse Leo’s Jazzy Gold in the .90 Meter Jumpers, winning a 2ND out of 38 entries. He showed Hennah’s horse Idol Weiss and Whitney’s horse Serendipity in the 1.0 Meter Jumpers. Since Whitney was not at the show, Dev went on to show Serendipity in the 1.05 Meter Jumpers. He then finished the day riding Tall Dun and Handsome in the Warm Up and in the Low Hunter I.

On Thursday, Dev showed Leo’s Jazzy Gold and Serendipity in the 1.0 Meter Jumpers. He won this class on Serendipity out of a whopping 46 entries. This one blue ribbon would give Serendipity enough points to tie for GRAND CHAMPION in the 1.0 Meter Jumpers. Dev went on to show Serendipity in the 1.05 Meter Jumpers and both Serendipity and Idol Weiss in the 1.15 Meter Jumpers.

Finally, on Friday, Dev wrapped up his showing, taking Leo’s Jazzy Gold in the 1.0 Meter Jumpers, and Serendipity in the 1.05 Meter Jumpers and 1.15 Meter Jumpers. Serendipity spooked hard in the 1.05 Meter Jumpers, nearly unseating Dev, but he got it back together to win 7TH in the 1.15 Meter Jumpers.

July 14–17 Amy This was Amy’s First “AA” Show since Oklahoma last year, and boy was Tall Dun and Handsome a different horse. He performed beautifully. Look for this pair in the 3ft Adult Hunters, Equitation, and Medals in the fall.

On Wednesday, Amy took Tall Dun and Handsome in one Low Hunter class. On Thursday, she showed in the Warm up and final two Low Hunter classes of the 2'3" Low Hunter division. On Friday, the Modified Children/Adult Hunter started. Sparky performed very well, but wasn’t quite stylish enough to pin against the super fancy hunters that surrounded him in the first two Modified Children/Adult Hunters over fences. However, in the Equitation Round, he carried Amy to a 5TH place finish out of 21 entries. Amy finished up on Saturday, showing Tall Dun and Handsome in the final two Modified Children/Adult Hunters over fences. Good job Sparky! Amy loves you bunches!

July 14–18 Libby Libby knocked the competition’s socks off on her first day of showing. On Wednesday she won the first 1.0 Meter Jumpers class on her horse Leo’s Jazzy Gold. This one accomplishment would put her up enough points to tie for GRAND CHAMPION in the 1.0 Meter Jumpers.

On Thursday and Friday, Libby showed Leo’s Jazzy Gold in the 1.05 Meter Jumpers, and on Saturday, she showed in the Low Children’s Jumpers, winning a 7TH and a 4TH. On Sunday, she finished, showing in the Low Children’s Jumpers. What a great showing Libby. Congratulations!

Thank you Teri Beck for being such an outstanding clinician and thank you Whitney and Caitlyn for being such great demonstration riders. Important points we learned included differences between major and minor faults in hunter and equitation rounds, that it is very important above all for a rider to be consistant in their round, and that judges are vying for every rider that walks into their ring. They want to see their winner for their class in your round, so walk into the ring confidently.

Those that attended the banquet had a blast. The night was filled with good food and a ton of awards. It ended with a trip back in time to the discotheque and dancing to music by Wild Cherry, Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees, and songs like Celebration, Car Wash, and YMCA. There was newer music too, but who can deny the timelessness of classic disco music. It was a night of Celebration. Congratulations Devereaux Sporthorses.
